Your new role, what's involved?
  • Undertaking early scheme development, working with the industry supply chain, you will also be involved in the introduction of new signalling and control system technology solutions (ETCS, ARS and Traffic Management) onto UK mainline Railways.
  • Producing signalling designs with minimum supervision: feasibility studies, optioneering reports, alterability reports, signalling design specification, risk assessment reports, scheme development, detailed design.
  • Undertaking Independent checking of signalling design, commensurate with own knowledge and experience and within the budget provision for the work.
  • Undertaking the role of senior designer and deputising for the Contractor's Responsible Engineer as required,
  • Using Bentley Microstation CAD software and PLANS add-on module for signalling plan production,
  • Training and mentoring junior staff in design process and technical matters,
  • Providing resource estimates with the Technical Discipline Lead / Head of Discipline for proposals and projects,
  • Undertaking the role of team leader duties including the effective utilisation of design resources to client requirements and programme.
  • You will work on multidisciplinary rail schemes and interfacing with other disciplines along with project management and commercial staff to deliver safe, successful and efficient projects.

  • This is a fantastic opportunity to further develop your Signalling Design (IRSE 1.1.510v4) and Design Verification (IRSE 1.1.160v6) competencies within a multi-disciplinary design development team, working towards your Principles Designer license (IRSE 1.1.550v6) and / or undertaking the Signalling CRE Design role within a project team.
  • As a Senior Signalling Design Engineer within our team, there will be significant career progression opportunities, either working as part of a project team developing numerous signalling schemes within the UK (and potentially overseas); whilst also providing your own individual skills to develop and develop the next generation of signalling design engineers.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:
  • A degree, HND or equivalent level in a relevant subject,
  • Current IRSE Signalling Designer License 1.1.510 (essential),
  • Current IRSE Signalling Principles Designer License 1.1.550 (desirable),
  • Current IRSE Signalling Design Verifier License 1.1.160 (desirable),
  • Good knowledge of signalling principles, circuit detailed design and signalling standards,
  • Member of the IRSE or other Engineering Institution,
  • Experience in planning your own and your team work to meet project timescales and budget,
  • Ability to communicate effectively with managers and other engineers in all rail disciplines.
