This role will provide dedicated support to the School of Computer Science whilst contributing to College wide initiatives to improve and enhance the total student experience across the whole student body.
Working closely with the School Head of Operations, Head of Student Development the School Head of Education and the College Student Experience and Wellbeing Manager, the Student Experience Officer (SEO) will devise and deliver a wide range of student experience activities that meet School and College strategic objectives to improve student experience. In doing this they will identify opportunities for enhancement and review and evaluate School/College provision in this area and will work closely with the relevant student societies (as appropriate).
The role will be a visible and friendly presence for students and will co-ordinate a range of activities from student exhibitions, managing social media, contributing to student induction programmes, reviewing student survey results and drafting formal action in response to the survey results.
The SEO will contribute to strategic planning and evaluation, be able to identify further opportunities for enhancement and be able to review and evaluate current provision in relation to all aspects of the student experience.
The post holder may occasionally be required to work evenings during University term time in order to meet service requirement.
1. Academic support and the development of an inclusive student community
- Devising and running an annual programme of activities that foster an inclusive and supportive environment for students and enable students to challenge and distinguish themselves and further develop their academic skills. Events might include student residentials, student workshops and conferences, student trips, dissertation poster exhibitions, staff/student socials, high profile external speaker series. These may include:
o Events prompted by SSCs (e.g. sharing good practice) involving bids for CLAD funding
o Guest lectured from noted industrialists
o End of degree/pre-results celebrations
- Depending upon the nature of the event, management of events will involve: event planning, promotion of events to students and academic colleagues to encourage participation, on-the-day delivery, the co-ordination and management of student volunteers and paid assistants, event review and evaluation, and the management of budgets.
- Will act as the first point of contact with this School, College and University in arrangements for events
- This area of the role will require some evening and weekend work.
Student Representation System
- To ensure the School’s Student Representation System adheres to the University’s Code of Practice on Student Representation
- To work with the Guild of Students in the management and operation of the School’s Staff Student Committees. This involves ensuring effective communication with the academic and student bodies and the provision of a swift response to student comments and suggestions as well as providing guidance to students through the student rep election process
- To resolve issued raised from SSC meeting the School Head of Education and Head of Student Development and ensure that outcomes are communicated to the students
- To produce the School’s annual SSC reports for onward transmission to the College Education Committee
2. Careers Support
- The post holder will signpost students to the University Careers Network to provide Careers Guidance and support
- To work with the Careers Network and organise a schedule of events for students e.g. workshops, clinics, events and fairs
- Work with the Industrial Liaison Officer and Student Societies to organise and deliver an annual Careers Day that combines summer/year-long placement and graduate vacancies into one event ensuring maximum publicity within the School for the benefit of students
- Collation of graduate destination information for School of Engineering students by liaising with central University systems and services.
3. Student Satisfaction Surveys
- Working with academic and Professional Services colleagues to ensure the effective operation of a number of key University, College and School student feedback processes. These include National Student Survey (NSS), the Birmingham Student Survey, The Postgraduate Taught Student Survey, Module Evaluation Questionnaires and the University’s “You said… We Did”.
- Analyse survey results with Senior Professional Services colleagues and recommend actions
- To ensure the student body is aware of actions from the student survey results through Canvas and Staff Student Committees
4. Responding to Student Feedback
- To hold informal meetings of student representatives on a regular basis (e.g. fortnightly) in order to discuss issues which may need resolution in a timelier manner than formal SSC meetings may allow
- To facilitate focus group meetings with students to gather feedback on particular themes as required by Senior Management
5. Student Experience and Communication Activities
- The postholder is expected to lead on a number of student experience activities including coordinating and leading Welcome and Induction activities.
- Maintain a range of dynamic and student friendly communications to all undergraduate and postgraduate students via iVLE, Twitter, Facebook and timely newsletters.
6. Coordination and Teamwork
- To meet with other staff engaged in Student Experience activities across the College, and wider University to share good practice and contribute to the development of the role.
- To provide support/cover for other Student Experience Officers in the College
- To work closely with other senior staff in the School/College to make constructive contributions to the development of activity and strategy and the delivery of the College’s strategic objectives.
7. Support across the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences
The postholder may also be required to work in other parts of the College.
The postholder will participate in various Working Groups and provide secretarial support to Committee meetings as appropriate.
Any other duties as allocated by the College Student Experience & Wellbeing Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, and Experience required
- A good first degree is desirable (preferably in one of the academic disciplines of the College is desirable)
- An excellent understanding of undergraduate and postgraduate education and the student lifecycle.
- Experience of supporting students in Higher Education (either in a voluntary or paid capacity
- Excellent networking abilities
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills to work with a wide range of academic, support and industrial people as well as with undergraduate/postgraduate students
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Effective team working skills
- Self- motivated, well-organised and able to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines
- Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages including use of databases and spreadsheets
- Ideally have experience in developing web-based materials
- Knowledge of emerging social media trends is desirable
- Knowledge of the issues facing the Higher Education sector is desirable
- Understanding of the issues affecting the student academic experience in a Higher Education environment
- Willingness to learn and understand the direction/vision of the School and College and how this may impact the student experience
- Commitment to continuing professional development and training
- The post-holder is required to establish effective working relationships with a wide cross-section of staff within the School, College and within the University.
- The postholder is expected to lead on a number of student experience activities e.g. Welcome and Induction; student enhancement events; working and support student reps to ensure issues are dealt with quickly and outcomes communicated to the student body.
- The nature and type of impact is expected to range from providing advice on non-academic support issues and making decisions on the type of student enhancement activities to improve the student experience within the School.
- The post holder is required to working closely with Head of Education and Head of School and key academic staff in prioritising support services for the whole of the academic year.
- The post holder needs to have a sound understanding of HEI provision.
- Experience and/or understanding of the type of support and enhancement activities that would improve the students experience during their studies.
Problem solving and decision making

- Prioritising tasks e.g. to ensure information regarding student support meetings is made available at the start of the academic year.
- Meeting with student reps on a regular basis and ensuring actions from those meetings are dealt with promptly and communicated to the student body.
- Responding to students’ queries which will require academic input e.g. relating to their programme of study.
- Operational management of administrative processes and procedures e.g. requiring approval from the Head of Education or other senior academic member of staff.
- Major issues relating to programme content or individual members of academic staff
- The postholder will be expected to work closely with the Student Guild, Careers and other areas of the University.
- The post holder will work collaboratively with senior Professional Services staff within the College and across the University and their teams; the School Senior Tutor; and academic staff as appropriate.
